Diabetic Retinopathy occurs when blood vessels stop feeding the retina properly. In its early stages, the blood vessels may leak fluid into the retina which can affect the macula, the entire retina, or the vitreous and distort vision. It may cause scotomas throughout the entire visual field. In later stages, in an attempt to feed the retina, new incomplete blood vessels may grow and break, leaking blood into the center of the eye causing serious vision loss.
