We are now going to concentrate on the effects of reductions in the visual field. Just as certain eye conditions will impact cone cells or cone photo receptors in the eye, other eye conditions can also impact the rod cells or rod photo receptors and their function. Rod cells are predominantly used to first locate the objects in our visual field telling us what that object is. It is also of tremendous value in our mobility or our ability to travel detecting objects and obstacles within our path. It is also valuable in our night-time vision in gauging the motion and speed of objects approaching us.
